DNC chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz in Philly

On Tuesday, June 7th, Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz came to Philly to launch a massive Voter Registration Drive in preparation for the November 2012 re-election of President Obama. She was welcomed at the OFA office by Philadelphia Volunteers, Community Organizers, Field Directors and Summer Interns.

Congresswoman Wasserman reminded us of the power of community organizing. She herself knocked on thousands of doors before her first election at the age of 25. She now represents the 20th District of FL in Congress and was asked by the President to serve as the DNC Chairwoman. She charged us to focus on recruiting new volunteers and registering new voters, energizing our teams, and yes, encouraging people to contribute financially according to their means. She offered to come back and canvass with us. Thank you, Congresswoman Wasserman; we are honored to have you as our leader!

On First Friday in Old City, thousand of folks stroll trough the
streets, visit art galleries, listen to street music, and buy art from
students. Each month, we set up our table at the corner of 2d St and
Church and because it’s next to a Federal park, we now have applied
for and received an official permit to stand there. The Park rangers
have become our friends! So yesterday, we started at 5PM, registering
to vote our first person before even finishing setting up.

By the end of that beautiful night, we had encountered many people who
are already “In”, we had 28 completed voter registration cards, mostly
young new voters and folks who moved recently; and we collected 27
“I’m In” cards. The enthusiasm to get in the campaign was palpable!
